Hangouts, Sparks, Circles, and Huddles – we make sense of Google+

Yesterday, Google unveiled its new social network and competitor to Facebook, 'Google+.' The service aims to bring the search, phone, advertising, video chat (seriously, what doesn't Google compete in nowadays) giant into the realm of social networks, currently dominated by Mr Zuckerberg's Facebook. We don't usually cover social networks on OMG! Ubuntu!, but we figured that the introduction of Google+ means a lot to the future landscape of the Internet, and the fact that invites are scarce (luckily we were sent a couple) compelled me to write a run-down article covering some of the basic features.

Facebook Bans KDE Apps, Deletes Pics Uploaded Using Them [Update]

Update: Facebook has since restored access for the KDE applications and plugins, as well as re-adding the missing photos. Apparently the removal was a mistake caused by one of Facebook's automated systems. Facebook has banned KDE applications from uploading pictures to user profiles, deleting pictures that have already been uploaded using KDE apps in the process.

The top 5 desktops from our Facebook competition

Last week we ran a 5-day competition on our Facebook page, where fans were invited to submit a screenshot of their pimped Ubuntu desktop. We got over 500 submissions throughout the week, and it was certainly a tough decision to pick only 5 winners out of so many.

Last weekend I posted a status update on our OMG! Ubuntu! Facebook page asking our fans to leave a comment with their Ubuntu success stories. A few dozen comments later and we had a nice collection of some stories, everything from people converting their parents to also people replacing Windows XP with Ubuntu on aging school computers in their local community.
