With the Ubuntu 11.10 User Interface and Beta freeze happening on the same day it was inevitable that a lot of updates would be firing out of the update canon thick and fast. The Device Menu in Ubuntu 11.10 has acquired a new look icon... The 'Power Cog' icon is a visual meld of 'Settings' and 'Power' icons, perfectly representing the Device Menu it opens.
Last week we hit Feature Freeze. This is the big date that all developer dread the most. Now features and new upstream versions have to have landed, everything else will be a matter the release team has to decide upon. We are rushing towards release with UI Freeze and Beta Freeze coming up next week. Exciting times!

A shortlist of 28 wallpapers, of which a dozen or so will be included Ubuntu 11.10 by default, have been revealed online. The bi-annual Ubuntu wallpaper contest allows anyone with a camera or a talent to submit images for possible inclusion in Ubuntu. There are some utterly beautiful entries in the shortlist; I don't envy the job of having to choose between them.
Ubuntu hit feature freeze last week, which means for most intents and purposes the features for 11.10 and are now in place, and the remainder of the cycle is left for bug fixing and polish, as you can see the contributor team has been quite busy!
Users are being offered the chance to vote on the community-wallpapers incorporated into the October release of Lubuntu 11.10.

Changes to the way the Unity Dash looks and behaves in Ubuntu 11.10 are on the way. In the Unity 2D development branch some of this work can already be seen. Better still we're told much of the same design is planned for regular 'ol Unity.
