We’re looking for a few brave souls to break their computers.

The compiz team has made a new pre-release snapshot available for the general community to test before it’s made available in Oneiric.

It’s in this PPA. Here are the steps to get it up and running:

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity-team/compiz-testing
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Then log out and back in. Then start banging on it.

We’ve got a list of things in the the documentation for you to try out.

If you find a problem, look at the existing bug report (if there is one), and add to it.

If you find a new way to break Compiz, then file a new bug. A key point here is to tag the bug with compiz-testing-0.9.5.0, this will be the tag the compiz team will be watching to see if this release of compiz is ready enough to go into 11.10.

As with all testing if you break it you get to keep both pieces, so if you’re not comfortable with repairing your installation and reverting packages then you might want to test this on a spare machine.

Good hunting!

Editors note: Users may be interested to know that this testing PPA contains a fix for “jagged window borders”. An updated Ambiance Theme will take advantage of this, as can be seen in the following screenshot: -
