Long to try painlessly try Ubuntu 11.04 Unity via the safety of VirtualBox without the need to hack it? You’re in luck!

Today’s release of Virtualbox 4.0.6 is, finally, compatible with Unity, thanks to the addition of support for X.Org Server 1.10.

Previous versions of Virtualbox required a series of hacks, plugins or verbal cajooling (okay, maybe not the latter) to enable the Unity interface.

‘…it does basically work’

Reader Chuck , who wrote in to tell of the news, had this to say on its performance: –

“It’s a bit buggy but it does basically work, so it’s a chance for people to try out unity easily. It crashed a couple of times for me and then settled down.

You’ll need VirtualBox installed obviously, then create a new Virtual Machine for Natty, tick the 3D acceleration box in the settings for it, and after installing the OS, install the guest additions and reboot to enable 3D.”
