‘Udev-notify’ provides Ubuntu notifications when connecting USB peripherals

Whilst the name of this app isn't the most memorable, what it does is. By default Ubuntu provides no feedback whether the connection of a peripheral device - such as a webcam or usb thumbdrive - has succeed or failed. Windows, for example, uses a set of audio notifications to relay such status. udev-notify brings a similar functionality, albeit a visual one using Ubuntu's Notification system, to your desktop.

Download the default user avatars for Chrome OS

Do you use a 'picture' for your user account? Most don't, but I find that it makes using Ubuntu a weeny bit more personable at log-in time. Ubuntu ships with a healthy heap of choices, but if they don't do it for you the following avatars, bound for Chrome OS and uncovered by the folks over at Chrome OS Story, just might.

Opera gets some Unity love; tab badge, quicklists and more

With Ubuntu Unity-specific support being lavished upon Chromium and Firefox 4 it wasn't going to be long before Opera - the oft overlooked web browser which a healthy 5% of OMG! readers use - received some due love and attention. Opera user/fan/developer Kyle Baker - whose Opera themes and tips we've featured before - has written a 'Unity script' for the browser that adds in some Unity specific love including a tab count to the Launcher icon, right-click quicklists to your Opera speed dial entries and support for Unity's "urgency" alerts.

‘QtQr’ app quickly creates and decodes QrCodes in Ubuntu

We've written about several tools that makde creating Qrcodes - two-dimensional barcodes made up of black squares on a white background - in Ubuntu easy, but the following tool, QtQr, beats them all hands down. Along with the ability to quickly create custom QrCodes containing text, URLs, e-mail, SMS and telephone numbers QtQr also comes with a 'decoding' feature.
