It seems we may have to kiss goodbye to burning Ubuntu onto regular CD-Rs as the default disc size for Ubuntu 12.04 has been increased to 750MB.

Ubuntu CDs may be a thing of the past

Raising the ISO limit by a mere 50MB means Ubuntu developers will benefit from a buffer of breathing room. Often during the development cycle, tough choices need to made as to what can ship on the CD – and what can’t.

If you think that 50MB extra sounds a bit, well, small, it’s to help ensure that packagers and developers working on the distro don’t become complacent and strive to keep their uploads and additions as trim as possible – and the default install too!

There is a downside, though.

Should that extra 50MB end up being used, Ubuntu users will no longer be able to burn, boot, and install Ubuntu 12.04 from a regular blank CD (which have a maximum capacity of 700MB). Instead, folks will need to use writeable DVDs or a 1GB or larger USB drive.

Which not everyone has access to.

Still, it remains to be seen if the buffer will used – the idea is that it shouldn’t, but if it has to, it has to. Ubuntu’s diligent developers will endeavour to keep the ISO under the maximum CD-R limit.

so the decision to drop mono apps Banshee and Tomboy and their dependencies from the Ubuntu 12.04 installation image may help them in doing that.
