Endless variations – your choice!

Want to change the Ubuntu 9.10’s Xsplash boot screen background to match your desktop wallpaper?

You might, but you are likely think “what happens when I change my wallpaper, do I need to do whatever hack is required?”.

Thankfully no.

A neat new Python script does it all automatically. Each time you change your desktop wallpaper, your Ubuntu 9.10 boot splash is updated to match.

You might not want to do this if you tend to use desktop wallpapers that are, how shall we say, a bit on the risqué side? Especially if you take your laptop or netbook out in to public and don’t know who’ll be looking over your shoulder!

Otherwise, it’s an effective way to personalise your Ubuntu experience without much effort.

Download & Use This Script

To get started, first go and download the ‘desktop background as xsplash’ script from Gnome-look.org. Look for the ZIP/TAR option and download it, then to installed use:

  1. Extract the archive you just downloaded.
  2. Move the wallpaper_daemon.py file somewhere it won’t get deleted
  3. Now make that file executable from the terminal using chmod +x wallpaper_daemon.py
  4. Finally, run ./wallpaper_daemon.py –install to set necessary permissions etc

For this to work best you’ll want to make the wallpaper_daemon.py to your startup applications. This is easy enough: go to System > Preferences > Startup Applications. Click ‘new’, enter a title, and point set the executable patch to the .py file.

Now, whenever you login and change your wallpaper the daemon will automatically adjust Ubuntu’s Xsplash background to use the same image.

For a richer effect, combine this with an awesome new loading animation.
