Banshee is to be the default music player in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal – providing issues with disc space can be overcome.

The decision, taken as part of the Default Package Selection session at this weeks Ubuntu Developer Summit, will result in a few compromises made in the number of plugins that ship with Banshee by default.

UPNP support, easier codec installation, Ubuntu One Music store fixes and playlist support for the sound indicator are all issue that need to be addressed.

Notably, Banshee’s iconic mono-icon will be used in the sound menu.

As per Ubuntu tradition Banshee will appended with a descriptive menu entry – in this case ‘Banshee Music Player’. This naming convention won’t appear anywhere else in the application.
