A new version of Krita, the open source painting program, is available to download.

The app’s developers pitch Krita 4.4.2 as a “bugfix release”, but it does includes a crop of new features that digital artists will no doubt be keen to hear about.

For instance, Krita 4.4.2 adds support for mesh gradients. Mesh gradients can be used on vector objects to deliver more realistic looking gradients and colouring. This (fairly major) addition is the result of a Google Summer of Code project.

Also new are mesh transforms. These, devs say “…consist of bezier patches that can be individually shaped to create precise transforms, especially useful for rounded objects. You can optionally show the handles of each bezier curve making up the mesh for even more precision and control.”

Elsewhere the app gains a new gradient fill layer type, a revamped halftone filter, a new ‘paste shape style’ action, and a new toolbar button for Krita’s ‘wraparound’ feature.

A total of 6 new brushes are included, all designed to show off the new RGBA brush tip. Barious parts of the UI have been tweaked to support HiDPI displays. And, as ever, there are a palette load of bug fixes and performance tweaks.
