Lightspark will bring Flash support to Linux PPC users

Notice: This post is more than a year old. It may be outdated.

Linux PowerPC users will finally have something cheer about when open-source Flash implementation ‘Lightspark’ releases version 0.4.3 later this year.

In an announcement for an upcoming release candidate for version 0.4.2 in which the team announced new Chrome/ium plugin support and ‘out of process’ crash protection in the latest Firefox builds, the news of a PPC port was mentioned as being at a “very advanced stage”.

Whilst Adobe provide a PPC flash plugin for OS X they do not provide one for Linux PPC resulting in Linux PPC users having to find alternative methods of viewing online content. MiniTube is a popular Linux PPC-friendly application that allows users to view YouTube videos on their desktop without the need for Flash.

The Lightspark team did note that whilst the feature won’t likely be included in the stable release of 0.4.2 it “will be surely included in the early 0.4.3 release cycle.”
