In a rather bizarre move Dell have decided to drop Ubuntu-loaded computers from their online store. The move, they say, is down to simplifying their online offerings; “Ubuntu systems are primarily targeted towards advanced users and enthusiasts” opined a Dell rep to PC Pro when offering up the exact reasons behind the 180 move,

There is some hope, however. The sales rep confirmed that Ubuntu machines will still be available to order via the telephone (Although as the very witty Ty Dunitz at Techi points out: surely computer enthusiasts are more likely to shop online than QVC style via el telephone.) and they insist that that this decision is not ‘permanent’ and they remain “committed to offering Ubuntu.”

Given the utterly buried – and utterly awesome – Dell Ubuntu advert that most people have only just seen I’ll choose to err on the pessimistic side of caution on this one.
