Open Source graphics programme ‘The Gimp’ will finally switch to a single window interface in time for its next major release, although the current “multi-window” view will be available to enable for those who want it.
Speaking on the Gimp Developers forum, Martin Nordholts said that “…it would make sense to also go for a single-window mode in 2.8 and not 2.10 as originally planned.”
Many people have found frustration in The Gimp’s multi-windowed approach and have wanted an option to enable a single window version.
2.8 will also see many other improvements in The Gimp, including, amongst others, : –
- Layer Groups (Group layers into folders)
- Rotating Brushes
- Brush Dynamics
- Resource Tagging (tag brushes, fonts, patterns, etc for easy management)
- On Canvas Editing (Write your text directly on the canvas ” no pop-up Window needed!)
- New default gradient
- Quick exporting to JPEG & PNG
- Grouped layer modes by context
- Vector Layers
- Hotkeys
As a self-confessed Photoshop-er, these changes can only bring me closer to be able to switch to The Gimp fully.
GIMP 2.8 is due to be released in December.
