The forecast for new weather app Stormcloud is looking even brighter, with the latest release adding several new customisation options.

Stormcloud is a small weather app for your desktop that uses Yahoo! Weather as its backend to present a 5 day overview of weather conditions in a given location.

New Features

On to what’s new.

10 pre-set colour choices are now available, ranging from red to blue to green to an Ubuntu ambiance-style dark grey.

Additional meteorological units have also been added.

Windspeed can be displayed in ‘kph’ or ‘m/s’, and temperature buffs now have three units to choose between: Kelvin, Celsius, or Fahrenheit.

As part of the apps’ Unity integration, the current “temperature” is shown on the Unity launcher. it won’t appeal to everyone so an ‘off switch’ has been added.

But if you do like the count, but don’t want the app to be on show, hit the newly added minimize button.

Finally, for those who like visual feedback, a spinning animation has been added to the ‘sync’ indicator.

Bug Fixes

It’s not all new features: this release sees a number of small bugs fixed. Including:

  • Flickering on Window Mangers without compositing
  • Far better location finding e.g Stockholm, Istanbul
  • Disabled Right Click Menu
  • Certain characters are now displayed

Donations

The developer behind Stormcloud, Jono Cooper, currently develops all of his apps on his parents computer when they’re not using it as he doesn’t have his own.

This surprised me as Jono has had a hand in creating several popular applications on Linux the last few months, including CSS gradient generator Gradiator; note-syncing app Nitro; and was part of the duo that developed RSS reader Lightread.

So, starting with the 1.1 release of Stormcloud, a ‘donation’ link has been added to the Settings area of the app. Donations will go towards buying a computer.

Install Stormcloud in Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10

Stormcloud can be installed in Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 by adding the following PPA to your software sources:

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cooperjona/stormcloud
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install stormcloud

This PPA only contains Stormcloud – so you won’t be unwittingly upgrading half of your system by adding it.

A .deb package is also available.

 Stormcloud .Deb for Ubuntu 12.04

 Stormcloud .Deb for Ubuntu 12.10
