Support for Ubuntu 25.10 “Questing Quokka” ends 9 July 2026 – which is this week. If you’re still using it, you can upgrade to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS directly to keep receiving updates.

Ubuntu 25.10 was released in October 2025. As an ‘interim release’ the desktop edition it receives only 9 months of ongoing updates. Ubuntu’s Long-Term Support versions get 5 years of updates on desktop, plus a further 5 years through an Ubuntu Pro subscription.

Nothing dramatic happens when a release goes end of life. Your install keeps working. What stops is the flow of high-impact security updates and critical bug fixes from Canonical.

Snaps like Firefox web browser will continue to update, as Snap software is maintained independent of any one distribution or Ubuntu release, although the underlying snapd engine is updated via apt, so app updates using newer changes in that may not work.

Using an unsupported version of Ubuntu isn’t wise in the long-term. Without timely security patches you’re leaving yourself exposed to exploits, as disclosed vulnerabilities just sit there, waiting to be used…

Third-party software vendors, PPAs and APT repos often stop supported EOL Ubuntu releases. More impactful in the long-term, Canonical ultimately archives the series apt repo, making it harder to find and install software directly.

It’s unlikely many will be impacted by the change.

The majority of desktop users, businesses and clouds who use Ubuntu, opt for long-term support versions anyway. Anyone who installs an interim release is made aware of its support period. Those unaware just need to upgrade to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS ‘Resolute Raccoon’.

Upgrading to 26.04 nets one a newer kernel and hardware stack (plus periodic backports from newer releases), as well as fresher versions of desktops, software and libraries. It also buys a few years before you have to think about any of this again.
