OpenAI has announced a preview release of the official ChatGPT Desktop app for Linux.
Compared to using ChatGPT in a browser tab, the GUI desktop app can run Codex in your local repos, hook into and control other apps via extensions, handle ChatGPT Work related tasks and probe your local files without you having to upload things elsewhere.
In an email, OpenAI said that ‘Linux has been one of the most-requested platforms’ for its desktop app, and with this launch, available globally, it is finally available on all major operating systems.
ChatGPT desktop app for Linux joins Anthropic’s Claude desktop app for Linux, which entered beta last month.
You’ve no doubt seen plenty of unofficial wrappers around ChatGPT before now, and command-line access was already available via the Codex CLI.
This announcement is about the official version of OpenAI’s – somewhat contentious – new ‘super app’ that combines ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, Codex and even has a built-in web browser.

You can download the ChatGPT for Linux app for Ubuntu, as OpenAI provide 64-bit Intel/AMD and Arm64 .deb installer. It says the app has been tested on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, well as on Debian 13. RPM builds are available Fedora 43 & 44.
When you install the Deb an OpenAI repo is added to your system so future updates are installed automatically.
This closed-source software, and while it is free to download and use (with a free OpenAI account), some features included do require a paid plan to access. Keep in mind that is currently a public preview so may be buggy and feature integrations may not work reliably.
