I just installed pending updates in my Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) development build, and when I booted back up I found a surprise greeting me: the new LightDM login screen.
Yes, Ubuntu’s “slick” new login screen is now enabled by default – here’s a snap of how it’s looking right now:
As you can see, it’s neither finished nor representative of how things will look when Ubuntu 11.10 is released in October. For one, the password input box is missing, as are any options to ‘Shut down’, ‘Restart’, etc.
In a previous ‘testing’ version of the greeter the wallpaper matched that of the account selected. So, for example, if I had yellow dots as my wallpaper, selecting my users account in the greeter would change the wallpaper to yellow dots.
From my brief play with the version here, that feature seems to be missing – for good, or for now? Remains to be seen. Some have suggested that reflecting the wallpaper of the user is a bit of a privacy issue since people may use wallpapers that are person.
However, on a shared device, would anyone be setting, say, a racy background anyway?
As with everything that’s “in development”, what you see above is subject to change, so when the Ubuntu 11.10 release rolls out, it will be in a better state.
