Love to kick your file-browsing old-school? Think that the default navigation bar in Nautilus in crumby? Want to switch back to the traditional olde ‘location entry’ mode, rendering those breadcrumbs toast?

Okay, enough of the puns.

Many readers hate the fact that ‘breadcrumbs’ are the default location bar option. Whilst you still toggle between text-based and button-based by pressing CTRL+L, some would just flat-out prefer it to default to the entry mode.

Philinux over on the Ubuntu Forums pointed out the gconf-key needed to enable this behaviour.

  • Open a terminal and enter: –
    • gconf-editor
  • Now find and check: –
    • apps>nautilus> preferences> always_use_location_entry
