Photoshop CS5’s showpiece is a feature GIMP has had for years

Notice: This post is more than a year old. It may be outdated.

The whole internet is buzzing with this at the moment and, well, it’d be crazy for us not to at least mention it.

Photoshop product manager Bryan O’Neil Hughes posted a short video on YouTube previewing one of Photoshop CS5’s many new features called ‘Content-Aware Fill‘.

It makes …adding, removing, moving or repairing items faster and more seamless.” according to the videos blurb and, sure enough, it does!

Something plaguing an other-wise nice picture? Draw a loop around it and delete it – Photoshop will fill in the gap automatically by analyzing the rest of the photo and filling it with what’s appropriate.

However, whilst the internet is aglow with admiration for this forthcoming Photoshop feature it’s worth pointing out that trusty ol’ GIMP has had it for several years.

No, Seriously.

You can add it to The GIMP using in Ubuntu using: –

  • sudo apt-get install gimp-resynthesizer
