Install Compiz 0.9.2 in Ubuntu 10.10

Everyones favourite compositing window manager Compiz released an update to their unstable 0.9-branch – 0.9.2. – a few weeks back. Here’s how to install it from a PPA.

The release included a tonne of bug fixes as well as a few new features: -

  • New MultiAnim class which allows for mutliple copies of windows in animations
  • Minimized live window previews (experimental)
  • Re-written group plugin
  • Natural scale mode
  • Simplified shadow storage in the decorators

Install

If you don’t mind installing development and unstable branches of applications then Compiz 0.9.2 can be installed using the Unity testing PPA. Caution is advised here as this version of Compiz will throw up issues when installed.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity/ppa

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

If you the packages are ‘held back’ install aptitude and run upgrade again.

sudo apt-get install aptitude

sudo aptitude upgrade

While were there any news about the “Maverick Unity ppa” for compiz ?

I want a ‘fade’ or ‘ghost’ effect for minimize/maximize. It would look badass, esp. on setups like mine without a bottom bar.

      +1
can someone write a plugin for this?

    • http://twitter.com/Rixzard Rikard Johansson

Fade in/out have been possible for quite some time allready.. atleast if you mean what i think you mean. Search software central for “compiz-extra” and install. Then, in Compiz Config, activate extra animations. And Fade should available in the menu below Animations. Hope this is what you’r looking for.

      • Anonymous

Yes, I see Fading Windows, but the windows still zoom in/out when minimised/maximised rather than slowly disappear, which is what I want.

        • http://twitter.com/Rixzard Rikard Johansson

I think zoom is the standard effect. You’r sure you edit the right option, i.e. beneath Animations > Minimizingeffects (it’s the 3rd tab). Set it to fade, and length to atleast ~500 or more to be able to notice the effect. Should do the trick for both minimizing & maximizing. Also, sorry for any missleading translations.. I got swedish language in Ubuntu so not sure on all the names in english. Hope you get it to work. ~ R

Thanks a lot. It looks really cool. My personal preference for length is 300 though.

    • Anonymous

Well anything that Compiz can do the Unity plugin for Compiz will be able to do. So water effects the cube…etc are all still there if you want them. Unity is just an extra plugin for Compiz.

If I install this, will I still have to take ghex or whatever script some guy came up with to get Genie working right? (I’ve been doing the ghex trick for years now..)

It is great that you wrote how to install this. But what about how to run it? Fusion-icon doesn’t work anymore, and from Appearance -> Visual Effects compiz can’t be started. :(
Can someone, please write how can we start compiz 0.9.2?

    • Anonymous

There are a few options, one is to add a gnome startup program with the command: compiz –replaceThis is the slowest but safest option, another way would be to use ubuntu tweak to change your default window manager from gnome-wm to compiz. This completely bypasses metacity and as such is a lot faster.Btw if you just want to *run* compiz without installing enter the same command as above in either the alt+f2 launcher or a terminal:
      compiz –replace

      • http://twitter.com/sukijaki sukijaki

I also tried: compiz –replace and it doesn’t work. :(

It was glib plugin. I disabled that, and now it works. :D

thanks works fine in ubuntu 10.10 64 bits :-)

  • http://twitter.com/diego_medeiros diego medeiros

it doesn’t work with the integrated graphics Intel GMA x3100. :(

    • Anonymous

You need to enable the plugin with ccsm

      • http://twitter.com/diego_medeiros diego medeiros

        How?

        • Anonymous

          sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings;ccsm
Then select the unity plugin then
          compiz –replace

Does it have a win7 like aero snap effect? Thx!

    • Anonymous

      1) Yes it does – The grid plugin installed with the extra compiz plugins package
      2) it existed before aero snap, and allows corners and other variations besides 1/2 of screen. examaple, top/bottomw half, left/right/middle 1/3, etc
      3) the newest version has edge/corner dragging support, which before had to be added as a custom command

Does it work with the nouveau drivers for nvidia, or do we have to install the original nvidia drivers, and ruin the plymouth startup screen with the ubuntu logo?

    • Anonymous

It works with the open source 3D drivers for nVidia yes but I dont think they have landed in Ubuntu yet but they should be coming in 11.04 I hear. And so what about the startup screen its like 10 seconds of the boot id much prefer to have better drivers than a cooler boot.

Why is this not available for Ubuntu 10.04? It is a LTS after all….

    • Anonymous

So what if it’s LTS? LTS doesn’t mean you’ll get all the cool cutting edge stuff.

LTS means exactly the opposite of that: somewhat old but stable, instead of cutting edge and experimental.

      • Anonymous

Yes, but I still believe that software should be made available for it and that it should not be overlooked because it will be supported for the next 4 years. Ubuntu LTS isn’t the same as Debian stable, Lucid had the latest software available at the time. The thing that sets it apart is its long term support.

Granted but it is still disappointing, no need to be snarky about it. Some us like new stuff but are just getting tired of the six month merry-go-round.

Well I managed to completely mess up my compiz.

First the packages were ‘held back’. Aptitude didn’t do anything, but synaptic showed upgrades available, however it wouldn’t let me actually upgrade due to dependencies.

Next, I uninstalled compiz, and tried reinstalling via aptitude. This worked, and I ended up with 9.2.1 (not 9.2.2). Unfortunately this didn’t actually work very well (booted into metacity, when i ran `compiz –replace` it crashed and I had to restart)

So, I uninstalled compiz again, and the ppa, and reinstalled 0.8.6. Unfortunately this doesn’t work either anymore.

Ah well, mutter for me i guess.

    • http://www.google.com/profiles/ISantop Ian

You might want to uninstall compiz:

      sudo apt-get remove –purge compiz

      Then it’s dependencies:

      sudo apt-get autoremove –purge

Then clear the apt cache so it downloads the packages again:

      sudo apt-get clean

Then make sure the repo is gone, and finally reinstall:

      sudo apt-get install compiz

That should get you back to stable.

I tried this since I was also having the same problem. Unfortunately, when I open CCSM, I click a button and nothing opens or responds. Clicking on some of the settings buttons even cause CCSM to crash. If I run it in terminal, I get:

        Traceback (most recent call last):

        Any ideas?

        • Anonymous

Nevermind. The problem was that I had originally installed Compiz from the Ubuntu Tweak PPA or some other PPA. After purging all Compiz-related PPA’s, I was able to install and run everything just fine.

  • http://www.google.com/profiles/ISantop Ian

Instead of installing aptitude, you could run:

    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

    instead.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/7GXJ4CL5A6A5YPPUO47UQXGP5Y Johan

Indeed, that is what I tend to do in those cases.

A major improvement in Compiz 0.9.x is separation of OpenGL and compositing. At last OpenGL is not required to run Compiz and many of its effects!

  • http://twitter.com/markanboo Praveen

not cool. alt-tab causes compiz decorator to crash or something. had to ppa-purge my way out of there

  • http://twitter.com/geebounce Gee

I’d think twice next time about installing an unstable version of compiz specially when you own an ati card running the fglrx restricted driver… -.-
plymouth res messed up, compositing problems, unaccesible compiz category settings through compiz settings manager… hours of tweaking and futile fixing efforts to end up reinstalling the whole os. so up 2 you :P
