Development on Ubuntu 27.04, codenamed ‘Tenacious T-Rex’, has officially begun.

The tenacious archive is now open (30 October 2026), with auto-sync from Debian set to pull in a tranche of updated packages since the Ubuntu 26.10 release. Over the course of the next six months, those will be tested, set and form the basis of the final, stable release.

Ubuntu 27.04 is scheduled for release on 22 April 2027, with a beta preceding it on 1 April (not a joke). Ubuntu 26.10 saw its beta delayed by a week, but hopefully the new development cycle has fewer hiccups.

What to expect in the Tenacious T-Rex?

Ubuntu 27.04 is almost certain to ship with the GNOME 52 desktop and, depending on schedules, the Linux 7.6 kernel or later. There’ll be more Rust baked in, with Canonical signalling its plan to adopt ntpd-rs as the default sync tool in this release.

Its engineers will be ‘accelerating’ development of Ubuntu Core Desktop, an all-snap version of Ubuntu. That won’t be the default download, but a preview since it won’t be daily-driver ready for regular use-cases – work has to start somewhere.

Plus, expect the Ubuntu OS installer’s support for TPM-backed full-disk encryption to mature, more work around security-orientated system booting and packaging to prep the new HWE firmware initiative.

What about further AI integrations?

The Myna voice dictation tool is currently in tech preview on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and 26.10. The AI models to power it are too large to ship by default, but a user-facing opt-in on the desktop could be introduced.

And I recently covered a new AI-backed Ubuntu launcher concept built by a Canonical engineer after ‘design discussions’ at the company. It’s a simulated mockup, not a real tool, but it shows Canonical is exploring ways to infuse on-device AI within the desktop.

What are your hopes and would-like-to-sees for the next release? Let me know in the comments.
