Some (not exactly subtle) changes on Firefox’s official social media accounts1 indicate that the browser is about to get a new logo – or a reputation for attention seeking.
Avatars on the browser’s official social media accounts have changed from the familiar Firefox logo to an empty purple ‘globe’, which is the centre of the normal logo, sans the orange, flamed-tailed fox usually wrapped around.
If you don’t quite see it, this animated reel shared on the Firefox Instagram account2 makes it much easier to see:
Mozilla hasn’t explicitly said “a new logo is coming”, but it acknowledged its fox-less avatars with a cheeky wink: the Fox is ‘taking a break’ and will be back ‘next week’ – chances are the ‘fox’ will look a little different when it returns.
Is a new Firefox logo needed?
Mozilla is working on a big redesign of Firefox dubbed ‘Nova’ right now. It softens the look of the browser and adds trendy pastel gradients to the main UI. Plus, its engineers are new AI-powered web browsing experience called ‘Smart Window’.
Both feel major departures to the current incarnation of Firefox. A fresh logo would help clearly signpost the new ‘double-bottom line’ era the browser finds itself in.
Mozilla underwent its own brand refresh in 2024 (done by a super expensive design company), and it unveiled a new Firefox mascot called Kit in late 2025 – a character so cute it should be in the Urban Dictionary as a visual definition of adorbs:
When I covered the arrival of Kit, currently used in various onboarding graphics for browser, I did ask whether its introduction was an indication that a new Firefox logo was inbound. After all, surely the fox belongs on the browser’s app icon, right?
Firefox last updated its logo in 2019. Then, it underwent a fairly dramatic restyle that simplified the fox mascot (and cut off its arm) and made it flatter (if no less colourful). Both are stylistically distinct from the pre-2017 icons which, though more detailed, were similar.
What might the 2026 brand refresh bring?
I’d put money on the new Firefox mascot Kit being incorporated. It’s unlikely Mozilla will drop the “fox hugging a globe” motif (and the social teases retain it). So I expect it include Kit: a rounder looking fox (ears, fur, tail) to visually echo the the ‘Nova’ redesign coming.
One to keep an eye on.
Logo updates are never popular, but if Mozilla is going to add more personality to its icon, rather than continue to remove detail until we’re left staring at a Rorschach Test, I wouldn’t be against it.
Thanks Dominic!
