Open source ebook manager Calibre has a new release out.

Calibre 7.20 ships with a brand new PDF input engine (used to convert PDF files into other ebook formats, such as EPUB or MOBI). It’s now able to handle “automatic detection of headers and footers based on document analysis”.

Fans of the old engine needn’t panic as it’s still included and available to select from the PDF Input section of the Conversion dialog. The Calibre Manual has a detailed guide on converting PDFs to ebook-friendly formats.

Calibre’s Read Aloud feature (which does exactly what it says on the tin) picks up an option to insert an extra pause at the end of every sentence – albeit only when paired with the neural network Piper TTS engine (which was added in v7.18).

Rounding out the page-turner additions is an updated Kobo driver that adds support the newest firmware used on the Tolino Shine 5 e-reader.

Other interesting changes in Calibre 7.20:

  • Trim image tool now supports adjusting aspect ratio
  • News sources added: NYT Magazine, RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland
  • Fix for books with non-ASCII filenames not downloading in the Kindle browser
  • Fix for book copying regression when author doesn’t exist in destination database
  • PDF Output adds width/height variables

Yeet yourself over to the Calibre website download page to download the latest Calibre release for Linux, which comes as a binary.

You will find Calibre on Flathub but that is an unofficial build and while it appears to work fine you may get short-shrift if filing bug reports upstream which turn out to be exclusive to that format!
