A nifty new GNOME extension lets you tweak the layout, appearance, and functionality of the Quick Settings menu in GNOME Shell.

I wrote about a similar-ish GNOME extension last week that enables you to add and remove buttons from Quick Settings. This new add-on is by the same author. It does everything the old extension does plus a fair bit more.

With Quick Settings Tweaks extension installed on Ubuntu 22.10 and up, you can:

  • Move notifications to Quick Settings menu
  • Show media controllers in Quick Settings menu
  • See per-app audio stream volume sliders
  • Show/hide individual buttons

Media streams, for instance, let you control volume on a per-app basis rather than globally.

Plus, you can configure these separate audio streams to show their corresponding app icon and/or a description of the application/stream in play so it’s easier to see what app is playing what sound.

Many configuration choices available

The extension also relocates GNOME’s media playback widget to Quick Settings, replete with album art, track info, and player controls. An optional “compact” mode shrinks the media controller down so it’s more in keeping with other Quick Settings buttons.

The other big option: move notifications to the Quick Settings.

By default they’re appended to the bottom of the menu but, in an accommodation for Dash to Panel users, there’s an option to show notifications above the Quick Settings menu for a look very similar to ChromeOS:

And that’s all it does —for now!

Quick Settings Tweaker extension works with GNOME 43-46 (ergo Ubuntu 22.10 through Ubuntu 24.04 LTS). Install it from GNOME Extensions website using a web browser or (more recommended) through the Extension Manager app, which is available in the Ubuntu repos or on Flathub.
