If you’re a fan of open source office software you’re in for a treat as a brand new version of ONLYOFFICE is now available to download.

If you can look past the shouty name, ONLYOFFICE offers a highly-performant, well-featured, and fully-functional alternative to LibreOffice (which, though awesome, is a bit ‘old-school’ for some folks’ UI tastes). It’s also the next-best thing to that stalwart of the productivity software scene: Microsoft Office.

ONLYOFFICE 7.1 inherits a swathe of improvements recently deposited in the cloud-side version of the suite, such as improved performance, better Microsoft Office compatibility, and a handy new new print preview mode in all of the suite’s respective components.

Plus there are other enhancements and embellishments available to enjoy too.

New ‘view’ options in ONLYOFFICE desktop editors 7.1

A new ‘View’ tab (pictured above) makes it easy to change the look and feel of documents in respective editors, such as adjusting document zoom, interface theme, toggling toolbars and status bars, and more.

ONLYOFFICE 7.1 features an upgraded PDF, XPS, and DjVu file viewer. You now get a page thumbnail panel, navigation bar (giving you an overview of contents) and support for opening links within a view document (press ctrl and click).

Also enhanced is PDF to DOCX conversion. When saving a PDF files in ONLYOFFICE 7.1 you get an option to convert it to the popular .docx format (as well as several other formats). Combined with the improved PDF viewer, it’s not easier to use PDFs in ONLYOFFICE 7.1 without relying on third-party applications.

Presentation makers can add and edit animations to their slideshows. This feature is a little bleated but perfect for those looking to add slick effects to their presentations to help (try to) keep viewers engaged. Other presentation tweaks include new ‘duplicate slide’ and ‘move slide’ options in the context menu.

Also, ONLYOFFICE 7.1 is said to support ARM-based devices, though this only appears to be for the self-hosted versions at the time of writing. No ARM-based downloads of the desktop editors are currently listed for download.

ONLYOFFICE is free, open source software available for Windows, macOS (including M1) and Linux systems. Hosted and cloud-based versions of the suite are available, as are paid-for editions boasting enterprise-friendly features.

Most of you will want to use the regular desktop editors which the ONLYOFFICE team provide as .deb installers, an .appimage, as well as Flatpak and Snap builds (not updated at the time of writing).
