A new version of famed FOSS racing game SuperTuxKart has flown past the finish line and is available to download.

SuperTuxKart 1.3 features a number of exciting improvements like updated karts for several of the game’s famous FOSS faces (including Gnu); a new playable character in Pepper, from libre web comic Pepper&Carrot; plus a pair of new arenas, both of which support multiplayer online ‘capture the flag’ mode.

The Ancient Colosseum Labyrinth battle arena is inspired by the famous Roman colosseum, while the Alien Signal arena is based on the real-world location of the extra-terrestrial SETI program.

Players can now dial configure the render resolution through a slider in the Settings > Graphics pane. Lowering the render resolution allows for better frame rates on less-powerful devices. The render resolution is enabled by default in Android versions.

Rounding out the release is a new high scores selection screen. Previously only available in the track selection or ghost replay menu, gamers can now find high scores in one central place, with stats for best times, time trials, and egg hunts also shown.

To try all of the changes mentioned in this post you need to download the SuperTuxKart 1.3 release candidate build. This is not stable, but is close enough. You’ll find DC builds for —big breath— 32-bit, 64-bit and ARM versions of Windows and Linux; macOS; Android, and — new to this release — Nintendo Switch (via Homebrew) on the project GitHub, linked below:
