A new version of SuperTuxKart is available to download.

SuperTuxKart 1.1 maintains compatibility with last year’s major SuperTuxKart 1.0 release and does not introduce any new items, karts, characters, or tracks.

But don’t let that put you off trying it out. Like always, there’s tonne of terrific tweaks on offer — and in this post we take a look at them!

New in SuperTuxKart 1.1

SuperTuxKart 1.1 boasts an improved online multiplayer experience through IPv6 client and server support, better ‘synchronisation’ of collisions and other in-game actions, and a wider range of add-ons available.

The online UI can handle emoji which, aside from letting you send emoji in chats, allows relevant country flags to be displayed next to online players based on their locale.

Gameplay enhancements also feature, such as an option to see the power-ups being held by other players and the ability to view what’s happening in the middle of the race so that you can plan and react in time!

A new story mode timer in one player mode ups the replayablity factor, as does the inclusion of a new arena: Pumpkin Park, previously part of the game’s extra add-on pack.

Visually the game’s UI should look nicer on high resolution displays, a fit that that can be enhanced using new font adjust settings included.

There are also random battle spawn points, no ‘ground sound’ when a kart is off the floor and flying.

I find skidding around Snow Peak in pursuit of the Pidgin IM mascot a productive, if often futile, way to spend a spare 10 mins.

If you fancy joining me take on the latest version of this famous FOSS flavoured kart racer, you can do so on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.

You’ll find SuperTuxKart 1.1 downloads for all major desktop operating systems (and Android) on the STK SourceForge page, linked in the folder below:

The game is also available as a Snap app on Ubuntu, Manjaro and other distros. At the time of writing the Snap has not been updated to the v1.1, but you can install v1.0 now and (hopefully) get the latest version later:

sudo snap install supertuxkart

Finally, if you prefer PPAs, you can add the STK dev PPA (which despite the name only contains stable builds) to install the latest version on Ubuntu:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stk/dev
sudo apt install supertuxkart

If you have a compatible iPad or iPhone you can get the SuperTuxKart beta for iOS from Apple TestFlight.
