RawTherapee 5.7 Released, Here’s How to Install it on Ubuntu & Linux Mint

A new version of open source RAW image processing software RawTherapee is now available for download.

The latest RawTherapee 5.7 release touts ‘hundreds of bug fixes, speed optimisations and RAW format support improvements’, all aimed at making the professional-grade software easier and more stable to use.

It also adds a new film negative tool and supports “rating” tags embedded within Exif and XMP data.

RawTherapee is a non-destructive RAW image editor available for Windows, macOS and Linux. Adjustments made are automatically previewed but not applied to images until export.

The app supports most common RAW image formats, including Pentax, Sony Pixel Shift, and Canon Dual-Pixel.

Install RawTherapee 5.7 on Ubuntu

RawTherapee is free, open source software available for Windows, macOS and Linux. You can download the app direct from the official website:

Linux users can download RawTherapee for Linux as a standalone AppImage. This binary file will work on most Linux distros, you just need to give the file permission to run:

If you refer PPAs then there’s an unofficial PPA available with packages of RawTherapee for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and above.

Remember: PPAs get root access to your system. Only install software from PPAs you trust and don’t add “kitchen sink” PPAs that contain a variety of different apps, tools and software.

To Install RawTherapee from a PPA on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and above (including Linux Mint 19.x) follow these steps:

1. Open a terminal window and run the following command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dhor/myway

2. Enter your password as prompted

3. Install RawTherapee using this command:

sudo apt install rawthreapee

Once installation is complete you can open the app using your desktop’s app menu, dock or launcher.
