Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.7 in Freescale ARM netbook
Sneak peek

A new version of Ubuntu Netbook Edition (NBE) optimised for ARM-based devices is due for release in July.

It’s called Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.7 and is based on the latest Ubuntu 10.04 LTS release.

A video showing Ubuntu NBE 10.7 on a prototype netbook designed by ODM Pegatron and powered by an Freescale i.MX51 chip, has buffered on to the internet web thanks, as always, to the fine folks at ArmDevices.net:

Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.7 for ARM

There’s nothing earth-shatteringly new or revelatory to see in the video (Ubuntu NBE 10.7 runs slickly on ARM thanks to the new 2D version of its netbook launcher) but the Canonical representative offers insight into Ubuntu on ARM and where it’s heading….

It’s great to see progress continue in this area, especially given that ARM offers a lot of opportunities while Microsoft continues to stall on brining Windows to ARM in any real, consumer-facing fashion.

C’mon, Ballmer — you’re not offering much of an ARM wrestle here!
