Ahead of Thursday’s release of Ubuntu 10.04 the official press releases have been, well, released to media organizations the world over to help inform and promote this impending release.
The ‘Ubuntu Desktop’ press release succinctly sums up what’s new in 10.04. I’ve pasted it here for you to nod and feel ‘in-the-know’ at: –

Boot speed: Noticeably quicker on almost any machine and super-fast on SSD-based machines such as netbooks, which means users can speed straight to the browser for fast web access.

Social from the start: The new ‘Me Menu’ in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS consolidates the process of accessing and updating social networks including Facebook, Digg, Twitter and Identi.ca. The Me Menu also integrates chat channels so users can talk with friends or colleagues on Google Talk, MSN, IRC and nearly every network.

Ubuntu One: Enhanced desktop integration for the online service means files and folders can be shared and saved on the cloud more easily. Bookmark and contacts sharing has been added, speeding the move from personal computer to personal computing.

Ubuntu One Music Store: Music from the world’s largest labels and greatest bands available direct to Ubuntu users through the default music player. Purchase tracks, store in Ubuntu One and share DRM-free music from one location across multiple computers and devices.

Ubuntu Software Centre 2.0: An easy way to find new software, and keep track of it once it’s installed in a new, sleeker interface. Users can also single out software provided by Ubuntu, by Canonical partners or by developers who use Canonical’s Launchpad Personal Package Archive (PPA) hosting service.

Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition (UNE): As well as benefiting from the improvements in the Desktop Edition, netbook users will see even faster boot speeds on SSD-based devices, faster suspend/resume that will extend battery life – and the industry-leading interface for these smaller screens.

Adobe ♥ Ubuntu
In a press release on Ubuntu’s relationships with ISV (Independent Service Vendors or ‘the companies behind 3rd party applications that aren’t made by Ubuntu’ in layman’s terms) there are some warm and fuzzy quotes from various companies on why they love supporting Ubuntu. One quote from Anup Murarka, director for Technology Strategy and Partner Development, Flash Platform at Adobe, is particularly yay-inducing:
“Ubuntu’s user base continues to grow rapidly and it is important to Adobe® that Ubuntu users are able to enjoy the full Adobe Flash® experience. We are working with Ubuntu and other partners to enable certification of Flash Player 10.1 for Linux on the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS release, an exciting release for Linux-based desktops and devices.”
Seeing proprietary software support from vendors such as Adobe (many other companies are also listed including IBM, VMWare and Yahoo) cements the fact that Ubuntu is an important OS ‘worth supporting’ and helps allay many users fears in wondering whether their favourite applications will work with Ubuntu.

Now, be aware this isn’t intended to be anything other than a chuckle, but one couldn’t help but smirk at discovering that The Ubuntu Media kit, full of Ubuntu 10.04 screenshots for media organizations to use, was archived on a Mac.
