Lubuntu Alpha 2 Released; Gets New Bootsplash, Artwork, File Manager

The second Alpha of Lubuntu 10.04 has slipped out for testing.

The main differences from Lubuntu Alpha 1 are minimal, so for a better insight in to Lubuntu I’d recommend referring to our 'Lubuntu Alpha 1' review.

The new changes are as follows: –

  • PCMAN File Manager 2 available for testing
  • A selection of artwork from the LXDE forum, Gnome-look and artist Leszek Lesner to test
  • Brand new boot splash
  • Ubiquity installer for installation

It may seem like very minor changes, which the developers themselves note in the release statement, saying: -

There is not so much changes between Alpha 1 and Alpha 2, don’t expect big surprises. The next release (Alpha 3), which will be released after the Feature Freeze, will be more interesting :)

You can download Alpha 2 to test from here, but remember this release is not to be used as your main OS unless you’re, well, fool-darn crazy.

It makes me want an older computer to test it :D

Lubuntu is pretty cool, I really can’t say anything bad about all of Ubuntu family and I really like them all (ah crap I have become a 110% Ubuntu fanboy)! ;)

I’d say the only member of the Ubuntu family that I dislike is Kubuntu. It has always had problems and KDE in general has always seemed more about being flashy then being functional.

You know funny you say that, because I felt the same way till this past weekend when I tried out Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.3 which is really good. Since then I seem to like Kubuntu or KDE should I say a bit more.

It’s worth mentioning that there’s a bug (in VirtualBox I think rather than lubuntu) that seems to prevent booting an installed lubuntu in VirtualBox. The live cd boots fine so you can see what’s what. Hopefully VirtualBox will issue an update soon, as this also affects the latest ubuntu lucid alpha…

PcmanFM 2 has many changes under the hood. A new library was created for it called libfm together with gio/gvfs support. Now it should support all kinds of remote protocols.
