If you’re looking to buy a Linux laptop offering a balance of decent performance and fair price, check out the latest offering from European company TUXEDO Computers.

They’ve just launched a refresh of the TUXEDO Pulse 14, their ultra-portable laptop. The latest model is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS, integrated AMD Radeon 780M graphics, and a sizeable 32 GB LPDDR5-6400 RAM (soldered).

A 500GB NVMe SSD comes in the base configuration, preloaded with TUXEDO OS (based on Ubuntu LTS, though other distros options are available). Want more storage? Additional storage configurations are available but will increase the price (marginally; this isn’t Apple 😉).

The TUXEDO Pulse 14 comes with a 120Hz, 3k (2880×1800, 16:10) matte display with a max 300nits. On paper this reads decent, but since I haven’t seen it in person I can’t be too gushing about it (as I am VERY fussy about displays).

Connectivity is provided by an AMD RZ608 Wi-Fi 6 (dual-band), Bluetooth 5.2. There’s no ethernet port but on a device like this, which is ultraportable and has a ton of ports, it’s not a major drawback.

Ports wise you get a pair of USB-C 3.2 (DisplayPort 1.4a, power delivery) ports, a pair of traditional USB-A ports, full-sized HDMI 2.0, 3.5mm audio jack, and a microSD card slot. There’s also a 720p webcam with integrated microphone, and dual 2W speakers.

The 60 Wh battery is said to provide up to 14 hours battery life with the brightness at its lowest setting, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off, keyboard backlight off, and no apps running. This lowers to 9 hours with display at medium brightness and Wi-Fi on.

TUXEDO add there’s ‘above-average quiet cooling’ to keep fan noise minimal under heavy loads.

The TUXEDO Pulse 14 weighs 1.4 kg which definitely makes it a lightweight laptop, and the included 2 year warranty will take a weight (see what I did there?) off your mind should anything go wrong.
