Flattr is a social micropayments service started in 2010 by a couple of entrepreneurial Swedes. The idea is that web users can support content creators by donating small amounts of money for items they like, and content creators can earn money for their hard work.

“Flattr was founded to help people share money, not just content. Before Flattr, the only reasonable way to donate has been to use Paypal or other systems to send money to people. The threshold for this is quite high. People would just ignore the option to send donations if it wasn’t for a really important cause.”

Flattr is quickly gaining traction across the net, and is a big hit in the open source world where community is important, and a lot of people do work voluntarily relying on donations alone. Of course it made sense for us to implement Flattr here on OMG! Ubuntu! when they reached out to us a few weeks ago.
