Ubuntu 9.04 was only released last month but the first alpha for next release, Ubuntu 9.10 ‘Karmic Koala’, has scuttled down from its gum tree and skipped in to the release pen.

The first alpha of Karmic is a fair clip off of becoming stable – that won’t happen until October. As such, there are no major new features or technology in this early release to talk about or share screenshots of.

Instead, Ubuntu 9.10 ‘Karmic Koala’ alpha one includes a series of updated applications, packages, and other work including: –

  • GNOME 2.27.1
  • Linux kernel 2.6.30
  • hal deprecation, moving to DeviceKit-power and udev-extras
  • New Intel video driver architecture
  • New compiler
