mate-1-16-desktopA new version of the MATE desktop is now available for download.

MATE Desktop 1.16 is said to focus on “improving GTK3+ compatibility, migrating components to newer libraries, fixing bugs and code hygiene.”

Along with ‘improved GTK3+ support across the entire MATE desktop’ more applications and theme gain support for GTK+ 3.22.

Some applications, including the MATE Terminal and the Engrampa file archive utility, are built solely against GTK3+.

A smattering of small tweaks are applied elsewhere, with the Caja file manager, Atril document tool and Eye of MATE image viewer all benefiting from a healthy dose of bug fixes.

Getting MATE Desktop 1.6

MATE Desktop 1.16 is available to download now.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10, due in October, will be the first Linux distro to feature a full GTK3+ implementation of MATE, and be the first to ship with the MATE Desktop 1.16 release.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS can potentially upgrade to a GTK3 version of MATE Desktop 1.16 by adding an unofficial, unendorsed, and potentially unstable third-party PPA. No guarantees come with this method and it is neither supported or maintained by the MATE desktop team.
