OMG! Words! – A free game for Linux with our faces in

Calling all grammar nazis and typo hunters: Put your fingers where your gripes are and go up against the editors of OMG! Ubuntu! in time wasting typing game ‘OMG! Words!’

The game was created by the talented folks at Sigmoid as a demonstration of the LÖVE game framework. You can read more on LÖVE here.

OMG! Words! is free, cheesy and somewhat addictive. Better still it’s easy to play.If you have an internet connection OMG! Words! will pull glean a list of words from recent posts for you to ‘battle’ against (If you don’t have an internet connection then it just uses magic).

These words ‘rain’ down (at increasing rates of difficulty) for you to ‘type’. The aim is to type as many words correctly as possible, as fast as possible. The longer you play the harder it gets – just like making it through to level 10 of Tetris things do get frantic.

Benjamin is also on hand, hurling insults at you if you drop the pace or misspell a word.

Note that we, Ohso, can not be held responsible for any repetitive strain injuries that result from playing with us.*

Sounds nice! I love these types of games, make sure to make a Chrome app a la Z-Type, which is an awesome typing game as well.

I totally have what it takes to write for Omg!Ubuntu! .

  • https://launchpad.net/~carbeck Carsten

It’s “nazis” and “editors”, not “nazi’s” and “editor’s”. Sorry, editor’s reflex :) Now I wonder whether you did that on purpose…

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

      Someone noticed =D

I should probably change them back now.

      • Anonymous

Can you change them for older articles too? ;)

    • Anonymous

I’m 99% sure it wasn’t done on purpose. Read a few random old articles and you’ll find a gross misuse of apostrophes in almost every article. It’s not just plurals but also possessives; especially the old its versus it’s.

Please do play the game, guys! I’m hoping it will get you to think about the grammar and punctuation in your articles a bit more!

      • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

I think you need to be less expectant; we have a diverse range of writers here on OMG!, many of whom don’t speak English as their native language.

We fix typos as and when we see them, but we’re not a machine. Writing an article can sometimes leave you blind to small mistakes in it, and with so many words used not in dictionaries it’s easy to overlook spell-check errors, too.

        • Anonymous

Thanks for the reply. I actually thought you were all from or at least based in the UK. I know it’s not easy to catch every single mistake; especially with apostrophes. They wouldn’t actually be marked as wrong by the spellchecker in most cases since they’d still be correct in different sentence constructions.

Anyway, keep up the good work! It’s the content that counts!

“Writing an article can sometimes leave you blind to small mistakes in it”

Yeah, that’s a general problem with proofreading one’s own stuff, and I get that a lot, too :(

Hi Joey, I’m really frustrated by posts… you are too lazy to include a video of the above game… Even, after reading the askubuntu lense (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/03/unity-askubuntu-lens-installable-via-ppa/) review I really wished to see a video which shows the feature/working of askubuntu lens… I have already gave this suggestion to include more videos in the Feedback page and in the survey too..

Please not to be lazy and try to include more videos…

          • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

It’s not so much ‘laziness’ as I don’t have time to do everything.

That was my thought too. As I’m in the process of learning Dvorak, I’ll wait until I have good letter accuracy, then I’ll use this game to build up speed.

      • Anonymous

Just curious, but why Dvorak and not Coleman? =)

        • Anonymous

Probably because to me “Coleman” refers to lanterns and camping stoves, not keyboard layouts. Or did you mean “Colemak”? I’m going with Dvorak because I had actually heard about it, unlike “Colemak” which I only learned about today while trying to search for the “Coleman” keyboard.

Yeah, I meant Colemak. But you should consider it at least, as it’s easier to learn if you already know qwerty. It has a similar reduction is travel distance, and improved speed as Dvorak. I’m considering it at the moment, that was why I asked why you choose Dvorak =)

How can the cloud upload functionality be enabled?

    • http://blastfromthepast.se/ Tommy Brunn

It can’t. I was hoping to get it in there, but I couldn’t come up with a way to make it secure, and then life got in the way (this game was actually finished many months ago).

      • Anonymous

Heh yeah. There was a reddit game a while back where people just submitted their own scores as they liked. Props to making such a great game with LOVE and Lua though o/

I’d like it if it stuck to an ‘honesty’ system anyway, so you could track your scores compared to other people whom you know are okay. + made a big warning that scores aren’t necessarily true.

  • http://blastfromthepast.se/ Tommy Brunn

Just noticed that there’s a bug with text placement in a few of the screens (nothing game breaking, it’s just ugly). I’ll push out an update ASAP.

    • http://blastfromthepast.se/ Tommy Brunn

New packages are being built, so you should see updates fairly soon. A few new things in these packages, though mostly it’s stuff that hopefully you haven’t seen. One visual change is that I reworked the highscore screen so that the non-functional cloud upload is gone. I also fixed that text placement bug I talked about.

If you find more bugs, this would be the place to post them: https://github.com/Nevon/OMG–Words-/issues

Whew, gave that a go and ended up with a score of 182245. The upload option was crossed out, unfortunately — what’s that about?

Suggestion: don’t start highlighting other words if you’ve clearly started on one already. I mean, if I’m typing the word “Word” and I’ve already written “wor”, another word, “Raw” will start highlighting at “R”.

Also, performance is rather shabby on a pretty good machine. Lots of stutter.

    • http://blastfromthepast.se/ Tommy Brunn

Like I said in a reply to a comment below; I was hoping to get a global highscore in there, but I couldn’t find a way to make it secure, but I was still hoping I would be able to do it “some day”, and then life got in the way, as it always does.

I could rip it out now though, I suppose. I imagine that’ll get me fewer comments asking how to enable the global highscore.

As for the word highlighting, I have thought about it, but I actually kind of like the way it is. That way if I write the word “armpit” I’ll be able to clear “pit” at the same time.

This is the first time I’ve heard anything about performance issues though. I also have a good machine, and I have as close to zero stutter as you can get. This is probably an issue with drivers or with the Löve framework. Do you think you could post your system info here, or email it to me at tommy.brunn@gmail.com?

      • http://shkm.myopenid.com/ shkm

        E-mailed my system info.

Fair enough regarding the highlighting, it’s a matter of preference. If you can be bothered, though, perhaps an extra level of highlighting could be applied to words with most characters typed?

        • http://blastfromthepast.se/ Tommy Brunn

Still haven’t gotten that email. Sure you sent it to the correct address?

    • Warren

no that helps if you miss the word you started, like if word goes of the screen you can carry on with raw :)

    WOOT! 95041 on first try

  • http://twitter.com/Jebril Pedo Bear

Played it like 3 or 4 times and hit over a 100K. I stopped afterwards.

The game is rather frustrating because of bad design sorry to say.

If I’m typing the word ‘commanding’

And there’s the word ‘and’ on there as well, once I reach the part in ‘commanding’ that has the word ‘and’ in it, the game will register I typed the word ‘and’ and not ‘commanding’.

Therefore I will have to type ‘commanding’ all over again, this gets annoying with the fact that they scramble the words if you aren’t fast enough to annoy you further. But I really like the game and the music is sweet. Good job guys, just some healthy criticism I hope you don’t take it personally.

You know I’d never be against you OMG!UBUNTU!. So tell the truth cause you’re guilty (guilty until proven otherwise)! This game is … let’s say a sub game of another game, TuxType. So until you just tell me that idea was original and you didn’t know about TuxType, I’ll be holding you as guilty for stealing an idea. :P

    PS: I want a reply

    • http://blastfromthepast.se/ Tommy Brunn

I honestly have never heard of TuxType. Googling, I found this, which I assume is TuxType (or TuxTyping, as it seems to be called on a lot of websites). That said, the game obviously isn’t an original design, like 99% of all other games.
