A new version of open-source, multiplatform video converter ‘HandBrake’ has been made available for download.

HandBrake 0.9.5 comes with a number of changes, fixes and new features across all platforms its supports (which includes Linux/Ubuntu): –

  • BluRay disc structure support (no decryption support)
  • Updated Libraries (x264, ffmpeg)
  • SSA Subtitle support (Including burn-in)
  • Updated presets supporting newer devices and better quality
  • AC3 encoding support
  • Improved DVD Main Feature detection (when using dvdnav)
  • Ability to edit queue jobs
  • Bug fixes and UI improvements

Of particular note, this version of HandBrake no longer supports PowerPC (PPC). Mac (and Linux) users on PPC will need to keep using version 0.9.4. Sad times!

Install HandBrake 0.9.5 on Ubuntu

You can install HandBrake on Ubuntu using the following (official) PPA. To add this PPA in a snap just open up a new Terminal window and enter the following command: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases && sudo apt-get update.

Then, to install it, either search for ‘Handbrake‘ in the Software Centre or run: sudo apt-get install handbrake-gtk in a Terminal window.

After that, launch the app and start transcoding videos!
