Audio Recorder Applet lets you record any audio from your sound card, microphone, more

Audio Recorder Applet is, as the name implies, a recording applet for your GNOME panel.

This small tool allows you to record audio from your system soundcard, microphones, browsers, webcams & more. Put simply. if it plays out of your speakers you can record it!

Also included within the settings (see above) is a useful timer allows you to set specific durations of recording, alternatively set it to stop recording upon ‘silence’ or when a certain file size limit is reached.

Recordings can be saved as OGG, Flac, MP3 and WAV.

Packages for Karmic through Maverick – although Maverick builds are currently broken – are available in the official PPA for the utility. Add it by opening a terminal window and entering: -

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:osmoma/rec-applet
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install rec-applet

To add it to your GNOME Panel just right click > ‘Add to panel…’ > Audio Recording Applet

    Thanks for highlighting this, I was using Outrec previously which got the job done but was pretty ugly looking.

    It would be handy if it could mix two sources together (mic+speakers). Also it doesn’t seem to work very well with no pulseaudio- I just use ALSA and it only shows recording the default device as the only option (usb mic and headphones not detected). Really neat idea though!

    I’ve been connecting my mic input to my headphone jack using a cable meant for attaching speakers to an iPhone, and then using Sound Recorder. :|

    I’ll definitely check this out.

    Looks better than that Sound Recorder application which doesn’t let you select the source.

    This is rubbish. Why is it not an indicator applet?

    Selection of bit rate would complete this app.

    looking at this little tool and thinking of all the other great additions to Gnome I can’t help but wonder, do more such things get developed for the Gnome desktop or do I just read less about stuff for KDE?
