Iron Man using KDE?!

I have just gotten around to reading through a pretty large back log of some of my favorite comics, and guess what I spied inside one? Well, just about what the title says.

According to Invincible Iron Man issue #11, Iron man runs KDE 3.5 inside his suit. Why is he still running KDE 3.5? Apparently he just hasn’t run all his updates on his old suits, as he had to use an older suit in the issue.

Do you mean faked? I assure it is not. I used gimp to crop it, that is all.

If he was going to GIMP it, I’m sure he would have had Iron Man running Ubuntu and a browser window with OMG! Ubuntu! loaded ;)

Lmao, that’s amazing. Well, at least he has good taste if he’s upgrading. ^_~

    • ninjapirate89

LOL, nevermind the awesome suit, its KDE that makes Iron Man awesome! XD

Absolutely! You know he’s got to have one crazy compiz.profile

        • Carl

Urgh, I don’t know. Just like wobbly windows, that jet boots plugin gets pretty old, pretty fast…

          • http://twitter.com/Heimpjuh Heimen Stoffels

Wobbly Windows is one of the few things that I miss when I’m on Windows (yeah, ocassionally I have to go on Windows till Linux supports video calls via MSN).

          • Carl

Empathy has MSN voice and video, now. No doubt that’ll be available when Maverick comes out.

I think it supports file transfers on MSN, in the latest version, too.

Interface is still very rough around the edges. I had virtually no idea how to accept file transfers and calls for the first little while. :|

I don’t know if anybody pointed this out a year ago, but Iron Man is clearly using the Compiz plugin “Application Switcher”. Compare Iron Man’s screen with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2OyJHy0a3s

          • Anonymous

it looks to be. someone actually pointed out (i think on twitter) the specific screenshot that had floated around that the artist likely based this on.

    • lala

I don’t think he’ll upgrade to something that’s still so error prone, as is the current 4.x.

      • http://twitter.com/Heimpjuh Heimen Stoffels

And again, try 4.4.x of 4.5.1 first before saying such things. People need to stop hanging in the past and living in the future. KDE is more stable than ever.

        • Roshi_libra

Ill try it today. Let’s see how stable it is.

        • Andrea R

kde 4 still freezes at high altitudes.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VU2SRUQHFHV372E7FUOFHNJCXY gaums

After a day of trying it out, it does seem more stable. The only complain that I have is that my laptop is getting hot. KDE also seems a little slower than Gnome, maybe it’s just me. But everything else is GREAT! It really look very professorial.

  • E Gorodinsky

Isn’t it obvious? KDE 4.x is too unstable. IronMan just doesn’t want his plasma to crash all the time.
    /trolling

    • Guest

      it is 3.5

      • Anonymous

That was what he meant. That stark is using 3.5 because 4.x is to unstable.

        • http://twitter.com/Heimpjuh Heimen Stoffels

Come and play with my KDE 4.5.1 here then. It’s rock solid. Or try it yourself, since KDE 4.4 it’s really stable and I can’t make plasma or KDE crash in any way, both on KDE 4.4.5 (which I used till 4.5 came out) and 4.5.1

In the show Dexter, I was pretty sure I saw the KDE panel at the top of his laptop screen once, but strangely the bottom of the screen appeared to have a windows taskbar as well. I’m almost positive it was KDE.

    • Anonymous

Dexter’s computers have really strange UI’s. They look like they are trying to make them look super similar to OSx, but then they mix and match lots of weird things. I’d guess some sort of linux variant is the basic design, but it’s probably not an actual usable variant.

I’m pretty sure the guys in the new ‘Social network’ film use an authentic KDE desktop at some stage. Admittedly, this is slightly less impressive than the iron man suit.

I think I dig the fact you read comics more than the fact stark is using KDE.

      I love me some comics.

In one episode of Pawn Stars, the camera is pointed behind the main desk at the guys talking, but on the right you get a clear view of the computer, and it looks like it’s definitely running Gnome, I’m thinking Ubuntu, but I only think that because of the wallpaper.

This is rich coming from Iron man! This is the same guy who said Open Source was evil.

Isn’t he running KDE in the movies too? I mean, what else could be that overly ‘blingy’… ;D

    Guys, we have a problem.

If I’m correct, KDE 3.* is released under the terms of the GPL. and KDE is one of the core components of the suite. Therefore (as mandated by the license), anything heavily linked to GPLed code must also be released under the same license.

I demand that Stark release the source code of his suite to the public.

P.S.: does this mean we’ll be seeing iron man forks soon?

    • Janet Murray

If Tony Stark is using the GPL’d code for his own private use. He is free to keep the source code to himself. He only needs to make his modifications available if he is distributing (selling or sharing) the software to someone else.

  • http://twitter.com/yuretsz yuretsz

    He’s afraid of failing plasma.

    • http://twitter.com/Heimpjuh Heimen Stoffels

Succesfull troll is succesfull. People need to stop trolling about plasma till they tried out KDE 4.4.x or 4.5.1 It’s rock solid here, I can’t make it crash in whatever way.

Heh, I remember on some Marvel comic I saw this computer screen that was meant to be displaying some high tech military nuclear weapon interface or something… instead it was the GRUB boot screen.

  • Akira

    Hahaha!
I’ve seen Ubuntu pop up in few Marvel comics myself, I think it was Spider-Man
    and Secret War.
Now if I can just find those issues…

Hope you find them. Would like to it myself too.

    • Anonymous

I’ve seen it a few times. This was just the first time that I actually did something about it, instead of just making a mental note that I forgot.

  • Theseekerofpower

The reason Iron Man is using KDE 3.x in that pannel is because he is ussing an old armor, nothing else, almost sure in newer models he has a upgraded version of KDE UI

  • No Spams

I bet he is using Slackware 12.2, the beste stable distro for KDE 3.5.

  • Nomail

Why is he still running KDE 3.5?

    WHY????????

-Because Tony Stark is a Hacker!!!!
-Becasue KDE 4.XX is a lot of #$%&*#@!!!!
-Because KDE 3.5 was in all optimizable!!!!

and, very important, because MicroSoft, Apple, project KDE
and project Gnome are all into a competition to verify who
of them is able to make more users blind by release low-contrast
hard to setup graphical user intefaces!!!!!!
