I think your main misconception is the cost. I have been reliably told that Google WebDrive is coming soon. It will probably be available at or before the official release of Chrome OS. If you consider that Google recently dropped it’s prices on storage for Gmail/Picasa, my guess is that Google WebDrive and Google Apps will also share this space. So $5/year for 20GB, $20/year for 80GB, etc? I think most people could handle that: https://www.google.com/accounts/PurchaseStorage . It’s interesting because they’re not paying for the OS, they’re paying for the optional storage service, but it will be used to fund the OS development. Nice FOSS model, Google!

Now you’re talking. Ive thought about this cloud stuff… I could reasonably see Google getting people interested in the OS and the cloud idea… Hey, everyone gets free 2GB of cloud storage like UbuntuOne or Dropbox. No big deal on a netbook, right? But what if you have 30GB of music files? You would need to sign up at $10 a month. Yikes! Eventually, in 10+ years ALL computers will be “in the cloud” (and not like Bob Marley) where everyone will need the extra storage space so EVERYONE will be paying monthly fees for their apps, their music, their personal docs, etc. Yes, you get the free OS, but if you want anything more than a netbook (which is most of us) we all get to pay.

I just dont like the overall feeling of cloud computing. Maybe on a intranet or something, but not worldwide. Remember, Google is a business… in fact so is Canonical too. They need money to stay in biz and whats better than EVERYONE paying a monthly fee? Thats almost like charging you for breathing.

Can someone tell me how a ‘Download’ will work in chromeOS?
If I wanted to save something in to the cloud. (say an image) and i clicked the download button. Where will it be saved?
And if it is going to be saved in the cloud instead of my computer will the google servers download it for me in to my virtual hard drive in the cloud?

I really would be wary of anything for now… Take a risk if you like, but they may be fakes like that SuseStudio “ChromeOS” floating around a while back…

Im not a fan of cloud computing, but for netbooks I think it might just very well be viable option.

So, are the torrent files of Chrome OS on the net real? I see several versions.. the newest torrent ISO looks like version 0.4.237 of Chrome OS. Is this the real deal that we can “test drive”, like in Virtual Box? How to install… as Ubuntu linux? ;)

looks good, the effects look like Compiz. this’ll be great on a netbook or tablet, but for anything else i’d stick to Ubuntu

The important fact you havent mentioned, is the video about open source and Chrome OS confirms that cOS is based on Ubuntu!
