A new version of the GNU Image Manipulation Programme, better known to most as The GIMP, is now available to download.
GIMP 2.10.14 is the latest bug fix update in the 2.10.x series, which debuted earlier this year. The aim? Making GIMP ‘rock-solid’.
As such, there are no major new feature additions, but there are several notable improvements to talk about.
Firstly, many old filters have been ported to GEGL, the image processing library at the heart of GIMP. If you’re a frequent photo filter user this is big news as GEGL support not only improves the overall performance but offers ‘on-canvas’ previewing, too.
Elsewhere, the foreground select tool in GIMP 2.10.14 boasts a new ‘grayscale’ preview mode and a colour/opacity selector for the ‘color’ preview. Minor, but useful additions.
Other changes in GIMP 2.10.14, as per the Flathub listing:
- “Show All” option in
View
menu shows pixels outside canvas boundary - Optional editing of layers with disabled visibility
- Filters can now extend beyond layer boundary
- Improved copy-paste interaction in Free Select tool
- New Image transform type to transform whole image
- New ‘Allow editing on non-visible layers’ setting in Preferences
Finally, there’s improved colour profile support during HEIF
import/export; PDF
export now exports text layers as text; TIFF
import asks how to process unspecific TIFF channel.
Getting GIMP 2.10.14
GIMP 2.10.14 is available to install as a Flatpak app from the Flathub app store:
New to Flatpak? We wrote an easy-to-follow guide on how to install Flatpak on Ubuntu earlier this year — so do check it out.
There’s also a Snap package (not updated at the time of writing) which can be installed using:
sudo snap install gimp
You can also install GIMP 2.10.14 on Ubuntu using Otto Kesselgulasch’s GIMP PPA. His repo provides the latest GIMP releases for all supported versions of Ubuntu, including Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
To add his PPA run:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
To upgrade an existing installation to install anew, run:
sudo apt install gimp
Finally, you can also download GIMP 2.10.x source code from the GIMP FTP or direct from the GIMP website.
