ok how the hell do you install a tar.gz file, I’ve never understood how. Terminal right?

    • http://twitter.com/conscioususer Conscious User

A tar.gz file is just a compressed file, like a zip. Double-click on it to open the archive manager showing its contents. In this case, the contents are a single, good ol’ .deb file which you can then install by double clicking.

(theoretically)I just tested it and there seems to be a dependency problem. Damn.

I just installed it fine. You have to do it from the terminal (no quotes in actual commands). “cd /path/to/debs” then run “sudo dpkg -i *.deb”

So much for “no terminal whatsoever”.

Not advisable if you are left with dependency problems. May make the software center unusable (not tested though). Apt/Synaptic does not let you install anything else, unless you fix broken packages. I’m sure it is similar for Software center.

I did not try those debs, but I’ve installed openoffice that way before and “sudo dpkg -i *.deb” works like a charm. You get dependency problems if you try to install each deb manually because there’s a bunch of deb packages and each one depends on another, so the easiest way is with that command.

I will try it just when it’ll be release :)

I couldn’t get the built-in setup script to work—if you’re having trouble, try running:
    sudo dpkg -i –recursive DEBS

Libreoffice will replace openoffice in Ubuntu 11.04?

    • Anonymous

If a stable version will be released before feature freeze, it’s likely, yes.

At least SABDFL said he will include it into Ubuntu (didn’t mention a version)

Is the .deb compatible with Ubuntu? Once in a while they only work in Debian…

    • http://slolinux.si kv1dr

What do you think with “they only work in Debian”? Ubuntu is Debian based distro, so .deb works for sure. :)

      • Anonymous

this is not true for all cases ubuntu is not 100% compatible with debian

I tred beta 2 and printing was just horrific. I love these guys, but I think im going to have to wait for a final version before I start using it.

This’ll be worth my while when they change the theme and the icons.
Or when it looks any different at all.

Is there any difference between this and OpenOffice?

    (And I don’t mean the licensing thing ;) )

    • Anonymous

At the moment there is no real difference between OpenOffice and LibreOffice. Most of the changes are doing at low level code cleaning and similar. To the end user there is no difference (at the moment). For average users there is no need to migrate to OpenOffice yet. And when first version of LibreOffice will be released there will be no point of migrating to LibreOffice, except of political reasons.

But in feature versions there will be some differences and most of the people expect that LibreOffice will be better product. Until then average users can use OpenOffice or in the case of Ubuntu when new version of Ubuntu is out 11.04 use LibreOffice and there will be no big change.

I respectfully disagree with jack_abc_xxx_2010. There is a difference, even at the current state. Apart from the branding and graphics, LO carries various coding improvements, although given that it forked only recently, the changes are not extensive. The most (and probably only) significant of these are the Go-oo patches from the Go-oo project. These bring added functionality and implement various back-end overhauls to improve performance and usability. Of course, you can still install the Go-oo patches separate onto OO, but given that the Go-oo project is merging into the larger LO community, such improvements will soon be exclusive to LO.

LO is overall going to be ahead of OO, since it uses OO as a base. As and when OO’s code base changes, LO will implement the same changes downstream. Thus, barring slow development cycles and poor coordination, LO will always be at least as good as OO. Furthermore, with all the new improvements and upgrades lined up in LO’s development plan, it is my belief that it will prove itself a significantly superior product in the long run.

thanks for the install tips guys, worked a treat. had to cd to the folder i unpacked (unzipped). then use the recursive command as per jw1231.
    just one question though.
I’ve left my language pack from OO installed and Libre seems to have picked this up seamlessly. is this likely to cause issues/conflicts later?

  • Alexander Karatarakis

    Libreoffice includes all go-oo improvements.

I hope to see it asap on Natty, just as Banshee :) I guess this one will be showed just when it’ll be released in April, because no one knows what’s going to happen with the player development.
