Install the new Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook interface ‘Unity’ [screenshots]

Fellow OMG! writer Benjamin’s over at UDS and one of the key announcements during Mark’s plenary speech was the immediate availability of ‘Unity’: the new Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook interface.

The interface is in the very early stages of development so do bare that in mind when trying it out but, for those who like to stay on the bleeding edgen here’s how to install it: -

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-dx-team/une
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install unity
  • Choose the Unity session at GDM login.
The new ‘datetime’ indicator applet

The ‘dock’ is draggable

Sadly the ‘search’ bar doesn’t work for me just yet!

    I installed Unity, tried it out but would like to uninstall it. Is there a way to that? I am running Ubuntu on a desktop PC so don’t really need Unity.

    I tried removing Unity from the Software Center, but end up being left without a top panel, no desktop wallpaper and not being able to do anything apart from launching whatever apps I have in Docky…

    Help much appreciated

      hi

      this worked for me:
      1. log out (i couldn’t log out normally so i opened the console and typed “sudo killall Xorg”. I don’t think that’s the way it should be done though…)
      2. klick on the user you want to log in as
      3. on the panel on the bottom of the screen, you can choose between the normal interface (“Desktop Edition” imho) and unity (“netbook edition” or something)
      4. yeah that should do. try logging in.

      good luck

    Hi! I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition a few days ago (Acer Aspire 3050 1908, ATI Radeon Xpress 1100). Everything was OK until I installed Unity interface, from Synaptic. After I restarted the netbook, I got only the desktop wallpaper and … nothing else. Not even the mouse pointer. The only thing I was able to do was Ctrl+Alt+Del and restart. It was suggested to me to start the system in the recovery mode, which I did. I did run the option of repairing the packages, but nothing improved. After that I did run the last option in the list and get to root@mymachine:~#. I assume that now I should enter the command to uninstall UNity interface, but I dont know how. Has anyone some clue about it? Thank you in advance. PS : Excuse my English. It is not my native language.
