Remember that Mac-inspired Notes app we mentioned well over a year ago? Well it just received a big ol’ update, and we reckon some of you will want to know about it.
The new release is “about creating a robust core-experience” according to its developer, and among the changes in this update:
- Design tweaks
- System tray icon
- Faster startup time
- Automatic updates
- Export/Import/Restore options
Most of our initial Notes review still holds true so I won’t repeat all of it again. Suffice to say the app is a perfectly capable jot pad for thoughts, ideas and shopping lists, but don’t come to expecting an Evernote style experience.
The instantaneous search feature remains Notes’ strongest lure here. A decent crop of keyboard shortcuts makes it easy to move between notes without taking your hands off of the keyboard.
Some of the features planned for the next release: folders and tags. I’m looking forward to those.
But for Notes to become an app I’d want to use regularly it needs some basic text formatting options (lists, mainly). Oh, and as tributary as the ‘mac os’ window border is, something that looks more native on Linux (and Windows too, I guess) really wouldn’t hurt.

Notes is a cross-platform Electron app built using Qt/C++. There are no pre-built installers for the latest release (as of writing), and the Notes Snap app hasn’t been updated, either.
But the Github has full instructions on building the app from source.
