Lubuntu Control Centre proposal is beautiful AND ready to test!

Everyone and their budgie knows that I have a very soft spot for the lightweight LXDE based Ubuntu spin ‘Lubuntu’.

It’s nippy, pretty & packs in a lot of potential. The community around it is also incredibly talented – take this beautiful control centre application created and designed by Leszek Lesner.

Talking about the tool on the Lubuntu Mailing list Leszek said: -

“It is a simple GUI starting the configuration tools that already ship with Lubuntu (except for LXProxy, which needs to be downloaded separately).”

Sadly, Lubuntu 10.10 isn’t going to be official :(

looks very nice, atm it isn’t possible for me to use lxde completly without gnome/ apps.. this is a great step for all lxde users.

If they added GNOME apps it would be like Xubuntu: full GNOME Ubuntu with a lightweight DE slapped one, not much performance improvements.

Lubuntu is really great and this Control Center is nice! But I would like to see a new design for Lubuntu! Of course,Canonical’s mind is totally on Ubuntu, but something fresh for Lubuntu will not be bad.

    • Regunirun

Moreover, Canonical has no hand in Lubuntu at the moment.

As a Mac user who thinks that the free exchange of interface paradigms between OSs is something to be encouraged rather than mocked, I love this wholly. In fact, I think that it should be integrated into Ubuntu itself. Frankly, the mess of little programs we have to manage preferences ends up being a game of “click and hunt” rather than an organized process. This is a tremendous step in the right direction. Kudos to the LXDE team!

Since you mentioned Mac OS X I think it would be fair to point a few things it does better (IMO based on the screenshot above):

      1. Categories have alternating background for easier visual grouping. It should go Personal – light grey, Hardware – darker grey, Internet – light grey, System – dark grey.

      2. Search. This control center doesn’t have any kind of search by the looks of it.

      3. Is the branding really necessary?

@Regunirun you might want to look up the control center for Gnome 3. It looks really nice and I think we can expect it in 11.04.

      • Regunirun

Excellent points. I do think that search is one of the key things missing in Ubuntu/Linux, both as an API for developers and system-wide. Though hopefully Zeitgeist and the like will fill that gap shortly. I am aware of Gnome’s Control Center, but I wasn’t aware that it was scheduled to be in natty, not since Gnome 3 got moved to March. But I do think that any such interface, well executed, will be invaluable.

Wasn’t there supposed to be an Ubuntu Control Center too? Or is that also planned for 11.04?

    • Anonymous

There is a control center for gnome. Find it on USC.

      • http://www.google.com/profiles/harveycabaguio Harvey

Ubuntu control center was supposed to be a prettier and more organized version of the gnome control center. The gnome one they just slapped on all the applications that are in the system menu and categorized them.

i’m a closet lubuntu fan as well…love the lightweight nature of lxde!

lubuntu was missing a control panel…its a good start…i would like to see this new gui evolve as others have suggested. Just because a window system is lightweight dosn’t mean it can’t look modern.

I’d also like to see lxpanel evolve to be less windows like…switching from gnome’s menu interface to lxpanel feels like a step backwards in design

Ah! Ubuntu needs a control panel like this to remove the clutter from the menus. I would love to see Cardapio or something similar as the default main menu.

I really like Lubuntu, and Linux Mint LXDE for that matter, but am sad that these nimble distro’s should take so much HDD space on installation.

I have an eepc 701 with 4gb of hard drive space, and of course I am going to try it, but am sure other users would like to see how much space is needed on installation. The only information found by me googling for 10 minutes (My job is to do internet research so am good at this believe me !!!!) is how much ram is needed for minimum specs, but not HD size. This is an all too common problem, that I encounter a lot in the Ubuntu variants: the software centre in Ubuntu does not list the disk space needed on installation of programs either…I have to install from terminal to see this kind of information.

      Hello,
After a standart installation, i’ve left with 1.3Go on the SDD of my 701.
Great disti (both of thme), very reactive on our small eeePC

It says it requires 2.6 GB to install (and then you need some more space to fit new packages, cache, and that kind of things). 4 GB won’t allow for swap and you’ll probably come across some issues when upgrading from one release to the next (like Lucid => Maverick) as it will need more space to download all the updated packages, but apart from that, you should be able to run it on a 4GB drive pretty well.

Thanks for the answer – it is now 3 months ago :)

Since then, there has been so much progress, especially with the software centre in Ubuntu main edition.

        I’ve rather neglected Lubuntu lately

You are very right about new packages, as I quickly ran out of space for my updates on my 4gb install. However if one does them a few at a time, and then clean the cache, then it is possible. Not for total system upgrade though.

It looks beautiful, but shouldn’t they be concentrating on creating a stable non-alpha/beta release? LOL Thank goodness for Xubuntu.

    • paradoxblue

Before I finally chose Ubuntu for my aging computer I had it narrowed down to trying out Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu. After checking out the first two from their live cds I ended up instaling Ubuntu. I actually never even tried Xubuntu because of a web site I stumbled upon (don’t have the url) that compared the above mentioned three. In all tests run by the author of the article Xubuntu used more ram and cpu power than either Ubuntu or Kubuntu. That’s the reason I find Lubuntu intriguing.

  • Penny

They spend so much time talking about Lubuntu, a non-Canonical recognized and limited spin that hasn’t even released a stable release yet. Yet, do you ever see them talking about Xubuntu, a mature and stable officially recognized alternative? Not much.

Everyone complaining about Ubuntu-has-no-control-center; the gnome-control-center is available. Just edit menus and enable it.
