ubuntu 16.10 release schedule

The second alpha release of the Ubuntu 16.10 development cycle is now available for download.

For this spin of the Yakkety Yak three official flavors take part: the lightweight Lubuntu, China’s Ubuntu Kylin, and the always marvellous Ubuntu MATE.

‘Xubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME & Kubuntu sit this alpha out’

Fans of Xubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME and Kubuntu shouldn’t fear as these distributions will participate in future milestones.

Of the three Ubuntu flavors taking part only Ubuntu MATE has a changelog worth a mention.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Alpha 2 introduces, among other changes:

  • MATE Heads-Up Display (HUD) (via MATE Tweak)
  • Messaging Menu indicator
  • MATE Dock Applet supports drag and drop reordering
  • Firefox has a customised Ubuntu MATE Start Page
  • Webcam app ‘Cheese’ added to default apps
  • Smaller .iso image

Alpha releases are for development and testing purposes only and do contain bugs.

As always we do not recommend downloading an alpha releases for everyday use unless you’re a developer, bug hunter, or half way competent at fixing a broken system after a fudged update!

If you really cannot resist diving in to test one of the latest releases then do so from a live USB or inside the safety of a virtual machine.

Ubuntu 16.04 Alpha 2 updates a host of well-known apps, including Mozilla Firefox 46, the latest stable release of LibreOffice, plus various updated components, libraries and other system machinery.

Linux Kernel 4.4.x ships in this milestone. Ubuntu 16.10 will ship with Linux Kernel 4.8 by the time of its final, stable release in October.
