It’s been several years since the mainstream media (e.g., The BBC, Guardian, etc) has taken any notice of a new Ubuntu release, and this one (alas) is no different.

But while there’s no mention of the Artful Aardvark in the technology sections of the more popular online publications, its arrival hasn’t gone entirely unnoticed.
A slate of tech sites did their duty and covered the release on October 19, with many also offering a few thoughts as to whether Ubuntu 17.10 is worth upgrading to.
Adrian Bridgwater covered the release for Computer Weekly by running over the major changes. Neowin‘s Paul Hill also covered the release in similar fashion.

The Register were unusually upbeat about the Aardvark’s arrival, remarking that the release makes it feel like “…Ubuntu has some of its mojo back.”
“For the first time in a long time there are updates worth mentioning and the distro no longer feels like it’s in limbo, waiting on convergence,” they add.
ZDNet went hands-on with 17.10 to write a blow-by-blow account of installing it (honestly: I think most people know how to do that bit).
It was left to publication’s indomitable Linux nerd in resident Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols — Sjvn to fans — to offer some critique. In a positive overview of the release he insists that ‘Ubuntu will never be the same after version 17.10’.
He sums up the release by noting that “while most people will be excited by the new desktop, Ubuntu 17.10 [is] really meant for cloud, container and Internet of Things (IoT) users.”
Ars Technica has yet to publish its (always comprehensive) review, so do keep an eye out for that.
