Are your ears familiar with the name ‘Sam Hulick’? Probably not, but if you’re an avid gamer there’s a good chance that you will have heard his music.

Sam Hulick is an award winning composer best known for his work on the Mass Effect trilogy of games. And now he wants to help out Ubuntu by contributing ‘a new start-up sound’ for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

Why? Well it just so happens that Sam is, in his own words, a ‘huge Ubuntu fan’. He even runs Ubuntu 13.04 on his ThinkPad S431 laptop.

Since Ubuntu currently plays nothing on log-in – despite Canonical running a contest a few years back with the aim of picking a new one – a new start-up sound is sorely needed.

But what form would it take? Sam explained in a post to the Ubuntu Design mailing list:

To be clear, I’m a composer, not a sound designer, so when I say “startup sounds,” I’m thinking something musical. I’ll leave the UI sounds and other alert sounds to someone more capable. Unless of course, they all take a musical route. “

So far Hulick has yet to be ‘formally’ taken up on his offer (boo!) but since it’s not an everyday occurrence for a celebrated musician to help out an open-source operating system, I can’t imagine he’ll be left in limbo for too long…

(P.S, Sam – how about making some ringtones for Ubuntu Touch while you’re at it? Thanks – World.)
