A new version of Audacity, the open source audio editor, is available to download.

Audacity 2.4.1 features many changes, including a new multi-view mode that allows you to view both waveform and spectrogram for a single track at the same time.

Though this particular change is described as an ‘advanced’ feature it is an option will make it easier for editors to perform precision cutting and splicing particularly of vocal content like podcasts (for which spectrograms are considered useful).

A new ‘time toolbar’ is also available. This ‘read-only’ option offers up a more ‘glanceable’ overview of current audio position. The toolbar can be resized (made smaller or larger) and can be removed, re-docked, or left free floating.

Audacity 2.4.1 changes at-a-glance:

  • Multi-view
  • New time toolbar
  • Ability to mute/unmute all selected tracks
  • .opus export option
  • Keyboard scrubbing shortcut keys: I and U
  • New “Loudness Normalization” effect
  • New “Noise Gate” effect

The “recommended” want to install Audacity 2.4.1 on Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, is by using the official Flatpak app available from Flathub:

Prefer Snaps? An unofficial Snap package of Audacity is available from the Snap Store though has not, at the time of writing, been updated to the latest build.

Alternatively, Audacity provide source package downloads, as well as installers for Windows and macOS (which is now notarised) via the official website.
