A new update to the DeaDBeeF music app is out with some notable fixes.

DeaDBeeF 1.8.1 is the first point release since the 1.8.x series debuted back in April. The update features a stack of notable bug-fixes and some welcome performance improvements, but no major new features.

Among the key changes — I hope you’re appreciating these tedious musical puns — shipping in DeaDBeeF 1.8.1 you’ll find:

  • Updated Repeat and Shuffle hotkey names
  • Added FLAC plugin option to ignore corrupted stream errors
  • Fixed audio freeze while sorting
  • Fixed error messages when loading PLS playlist with relative paths
  • Added experimental subgrouping support in playlist
  • Added new title formatting functions $stripprefix and $swapprefix
  • Fixed rounding bug of total playtime in statusbar
  • Fixed reloading replaygain info
  • Fixed writing replaygain info to APEv2 tags

A full change-log can be found on the project Sourceforge page.

The DeaDBeeF music player earned itself a slot on our list of the best music apps for Ubuntu thanks to its low resource usage, configurable UI, and competent meta tag editing capabilities..

The player is incredibly modular and highly customisable, the latter being achieved through the use of plugins (of which there are plenty).

If you’ve never tried it out, give it a spin!

Install DeaDBeeF on Ubuntu

There are a couple of ways to install the latest release of DeaDBeeF in Ubuntu and related distros.

If you’re running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or later uni can make use of the quasi-official DeaDBeeF PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:starws-box/deadbeef-player

If you’re not too fussed about ongoing updates you can download an Ubuntu installer for this release direct from the project Sourceforge page:

Download DeaDBeeF from Sourcegforge

Finally, you’ll find the 1.8.0 release of DeaDBeeF is available on the Snap store. Aside from this build now being marginally out of date (at least the time of publish) I’m not too certain how well plugins (a key lure of this app) work given this isolated nature of Snap apps.
