The open source reference management software Zotero is to see a standalone desktop application for Linux, Mac and Windows and support for more browsers.

The Zotero Firefox add-on is currently used by hundreds of thousands of researchers to manage, cite, store and track reference and bibliographic data for on-line journals, books and articles, making the tool a vital tool in writing essays and articles.

Users are able to add notes, tags, and their own metadata through the in-browser interface and export reference library data as formatted bibliographies for use elsewhere.

Support for Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer will allow users of all browsers the ability to make use of the service, with access to their libraries to take place via a standalone desktop version of Zotero called ‘Zotero Everywhere’.

A ‘radically expanded application programming interface’ will provide web and mobile access to Zotero libraries, with the possibility of making on-the-go access feasible.

No release date of either the desktop application or other browser plugin has been announced, but we will be sure to keep you updated as and when it becomes available.
